Drone recordings are now an integral part of professional video productions – for image films, corporate films, industrial plants, real estate, events and construction project documentation.
What do drone recordings really cost? And why should you take a particularly close look at who you commission in this area?
⚠ First things first: the legal side
Commercial drone flights in Germany require an EU driver’s license, registration with the Federal Aviation Office and commercial liability insurance (min. 750,000 SDR). Cheap offers of less than 200-300 euros from non-certified pilots are illegal – the client bears the risk of damage.

Drone footage as an add-on to the film shoot
The most common case: A corporate film is supplemented by aerial shots. A certified drone pilot accompanies the film team for 2-4 hours. Price range: 600-1,500 euros as an additional service.
Standalone drone video
Pure aerial photography package for real estate, industrial sites or infrastructure projects. Including editing and post-production. Price range: 1,200-3,500 euros.
Drone + ground camera combined
Professional productions combine aerial shots with ground-based camera systems for dynamic changes of perspective. Price range: 2,500-6,000 euros (independent project).
Industrial inspection and 3D mapping
Special cameras and analysis software are added for system inspections, photogrammetry or construction progress documentation. Price range: 2,000-8,000+ euros.
The 4 most important cost factors
1. approval costs
Flights in non-critical areas require hardly any additional effort. Flights in inner cities, near airports or over crowds require special permits – 2-4 weeks lead time and 300-800 euros additional costs.
2. drone equipment and camera system
DJI Mavic (4K standard) vs. DJI Inspire or Matrice with professional cameras (Zenmuse): Image quality and data depth differ considerably. High-end systems are recommended for broadcast use.
3. weather conditions and alternative dates
Winds over 10 m/s, rain or fog make drone flights impossible. Professional productions plan alternative dates – this increases planning reliability, but also the price.
4. post-production of the aerial shots
Raw drone footage needs colour correction, stabilization and editing. For a stand-alone drone video of 2-3 minutes, calculate 6-12 hours of post-production time.
